As American as the apple pie, they'd probably serve on stick, the West Alabama State Fair carnies have once again descended on Tuscaloosa, bringing with them cotton-candy, hair-raising rides and memories of youth.

Every year around this time, the big trucks carry in their whirling cargo, and the winking lights and screaming metal calls everyone from teen to tot.

The flashy rides, the mooing livestock, hardening corndogs, the mixing of stale popcorn and Coca-cola on the ground: the fair is all these things.

The fair will be in town until Saturday. Tickets are $5 for students and $6 for adults. Children under age five are admitted free. A schedule of fair events is available on the West Alabama State Fair Web site at http://www.westalstatefair.com/.
