When students complained last year about the lack of currently popular, higher profile artists playing the Homecoming concert, University Programs listened, and the organization's new leadership vowed to do better with this year's concert.
In an effort to satisfy students hoping to see a big name on campus in October, UP has secured the triple-platinum rock band DAUGHTRY to play a paid-admission Homecoming concert in Coleman Coliseum Friday, Oct. 5. It will be the first paid-admission Homecoming concert since Alan Jackson played in Coleman in 1998.
The concert has been confirmed by the office of Jeff Frasco, DAUGHTRY's representation. As of press time, Kendrick Durham, director of campus activities, said, "Contract negotiations [between UP and DAUGHTRY's representation] are still under way."
"This year we tried to appeal to the largest audience," said Heather Roberts, UP vice president. "You may not like them or have their CD, but you know someone who does and would like to see them."
Durham said they will be paying a small additional amount on DAUGHTRY's contract to secure an opening act; as of press time, neither Durham's nor Frasco's office knew who the opener will be.
DAUGHTRY, the band fronted by 2006 "American Idol" finalist Chris Daughtry, has sold more than 3 million copies of their self-titled debut, which was released last November. DAUGHTRY's debut is also the fastest-selling debut in the Nielsen Soundscan era, which began in 1991, as well as the first rock album to reach the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart since Bon Jovi's 1988 album "New Jersey." "Daughtry" currently sits at the 40 spot on the Billboard 200.
Durham said tickets for the event will go on sale once the contract is finalized and signed by both parties. Tickets will be divided into two price categories, for the students and general public. Tickets for students will cost $10, and tickets for the general public will be $30; as of yet, UP has no plans to set apart a block of tickets for students, but Durham said students will have the opportunity to purchase tickets "two or three days before [the] general public" so that students will be able to get the best seats.

Seriously? Daughtry? Great, maybe I can get my Grandma and her friends from the Soul Patrol to come waste money on a crappy band that, because it is homecoming, should be free in the first place. (Continued…)
Who picks these bands?

I just would like to know if there is some vote that I am missing or something. Is Daughtry really the best that we can get for $100,000?

I think you people need to find something else to complain about it. If you dont like it then go pay a crap loud for some concert you want to see. You need to get a life and appreciate that we are even having a homecoming concert. (Continued…)

This concert is, once again, awful. Granted, in the three years I have been here at the University, Daughtry is the best of three, however, I can't believe that at a school of this size and popularity, we can't get something a lot better. (Continued…)
