Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox will speak about the city's economic, social and urban development tonight at real estate honor fraternity Rho Epsilon's monthly meeting.
His presentation, "Building a Bridge to the Future," will address proposed economic development projects, including the growth of the University, planned downtown revitalization, riverfront development and overall residential and commercial expansion.
"I have never been more excited than I am today about the future of this city," Maddox said. "I am looking forward to sharing our vision about the promise of tomorrow."
Rho Epsilon is a nation-wide organization whose purpose is to promote lines of communication between the academic and business communities.
The group holds monthly meeting, provides speakers on timely topics and arranges opportunities for members to begin networking with professionals and alumni currently working in the real estate trade.
"I am very excited that Mayor Maddox has agreed to speak to us," said Jonathan Beling, Rho Epsilon president. "This is by far the largest event to date that Rho Epsilon has undertaken, and I have no doubt that it will be a success."
Beling said he thinks Maddox's speech will be both entertaining and informative and said he is hoping for a great turnout.
"We know that he'll provide students with an in-depth look at the future
of Tuscaloosa, something that a lot of people are interested in," said David Pelliccio, vice president of Rho Epsilon.
Rho Epsilon is sponsored by the Alabama Center for Real Estate, with offices in the Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration at the Capstone. As an organization that provides real estate statistics, demographics and economic trends for the real estate community, the center is a group for those interested in cityscape development. The center also provides student support, educational opportunities and sponsors the commercial real estate conference - being held at the Birmingham Sheraton Hotel this year.
Other topics being brought to the floor as part of Maddox's presentation include the proposed downtown parking deck, sales tax revenue, recent crime statistics and the economic impact of home football games on the community. Rho Epsilon invites any students interested to come join them for a private student reception with Maddox prior to the main presentation at 6 p.m. in 121 Bidgood Hall. Maddox's presentation will be at 6:30 p.m. in 240 Bidgood.
"We hope that everyone interested in business, real estate, or the future of Tuscaloosa will be there," Beling said.
