UA student and national bodybuilding champion Dan Puckett, 22, was found dead in his apartment Tuesday on 15th Street East, said Capt. Loyd Baker, commander of the Tuscaloosa County Metro Homicide Unit.

Baker said Puckett, who was a senior majoring in marketing, was found by his roommate shortly after 7 p.m. on the bathroom floor of his apartment in the Courtwood Apartments complex.

Baker said Puckett's roommate received a call from another acquaintance asking him to check on Puckett because the acquaintance had not heard from Puckett all day.

Baker said Puckett's roommate had to force open the bathroom door because it was locked. When he opened it, he found Puckett dead on the floor.

The Tuscaloosa News reported that Puckett's roommate had last seen Puckett at 1 p.m. Tuesday, and Puckett had complained of a possible muscle injury.

Baker said there were no obvious signs of trauma and no indication of foul play. The autopsy was done Wednesday. Baker said investigators are waiting on the autopsy results to determine the cause of death. It could be weeks until the final results are available, he said.

The Tuscaloosa News reported that Puckett is from Muscle Shoals and was the heavyweight winner of the 2006 NPC Teenage/Collegiate National Bodybuilding contest held in Pittsburgh. The Tuscaloosa News also reported that Puckett would have graduated in December.
