Thursday was the first day of the SGA-sponsored ninth annual Alabama Youth Summit, which continues until Saturday.

The summit, which is attended by high school seniors, began at 3 p.m. with registration and a reception.

After dinner, the students broke into committees to discuss, amongst other things, bill writing.

There are nine committees including judicial, Alabama Beverage Control, tax and revenue and health care.

Each committee will be charged with discussing the hot-button issues pertaining to their topic and develop ways to improve problems.

SGA Sen. Kendra Key said the committees were assigned experts who briefed them on their issues.

There will be debates on the bills they develop on Friday and Saturday. They will also have a question and answer session Friday with Congressman Jo Bonner, William Sellers, an attorney in Montgomery, and Gordon Martin, chairman-elect for the Montgomery area chamber of commerce and vice president for the Southern division of Alabama Power.

Each committee will present its proposed bill to the governor's staff Saturday, Key said. They will all have two bills to present, she said.

The high school students will also get a taste of campus living, she said. They will be staying in residence hall rooms with UA students that volunteered earlier this week.

The summit will close with an awards luncheon at 12:30 p.m.
