Big Al is making a play for the cover of EA Sports' "NCAA Football '09" for the Nintendo Wii. College football fans can currently vote for their mascot of choice through the official Electronic Arts Web site, www.easports.com/ncaa09.

The Wii version will be the only cover to sport the winning mascot, a unique trait because this iteration of "NCAA Football" will mark the first time the game is available for Nintendo's latest console. The game will also be available for the Playstation 2, Playstation 3, PSP and Xbox 360. Release dates have not yet been published, but the game is typically released in late summer.

Allison Jacobs, a junior majoring in English, is the founder of a Facebook group devoted to getting Big Al to the top.

The group, titled "Wii want Big Al to win!" is one of many springing up at colleges across the country, vying for their mascot to grace the cover of the game. The contest began Feb. 14, and ends March 14. Mascots from every Football Bowl Subdivision conference are in the running.

"It'd be really awesome to see Big Al on the cover of the game for the Wii," Jacobs said.

She said she learned of the voting competition because a friend sent her a Facebook invite to a group devoted to getting Auburn University's Aubie on the cover of the game.

"So I started the group so we could get Big Al's name out there," Jacobs said. "I think it will look good for the University."

The group devoted to Big Al's campaign currently has more than 900 members, and the group started shortly after voting commenced.

"As soon as I found everything out I got it up and running," Jacobs said.

She said she has previously had problems using EA's Web site to get to the voting tools, but that won't stop her from getting Big Al's face on the cover.

"I've been visiting other Facebook groups, to see what their ranking is," she said. "Somebody said Auburn was higher than us right now, but hopefully that will change soon. We've been looking to get some more support for Big Al.

"I think that kind of like special edition CD covers, if the Wii did several different mascots, that would be a really big thing - especially for college students," she said.

"I have friends that have a Wii, and I'm pretty positive I'll be over there playing it every day," Jacobs said.

EA's Web site states that the Wii version will sport "EA Sports Family Play," which the Web site says "creates a social, accessible experience for all to enjoy."

But Jacobs, for one, is not enthusiastic about this because she loves the game.

"We're just trying to support school spirit, and giving them the chance to support Big Al," she said. "We really want to step it up and show everybody that we're a college to be reckoned with."
