Lori Greene, UA coordinator of nutrition and health services, received the Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year award from the Tuscaloosa Dietetic Association.
Greene was nominated for the award by the organization for her leadership qualities, management, research, education and community outreach in areas related to the profession.
She provides medical nutrition therapy to adults, children and college-age students at the UA Student Health Center, and she works with the University Rec Center on collaborative projects.
Greene participates in the campus Athletic Interdisciplinary Team meeting and is an advisor of Project Health student organization.
Greene initiated the "Dietitian on the Go" program with Bama Dining and provides group classes to student organizations.
"I work with a handful of students in the dietetics coordinated program each year," Greene said. "The Student Dietetic Association on campus also helps me tremendously by providing volunteers during nutrition events on campus."
She also helps to lead the Eating Disorder Strategic Health Team and the Nutrition Strategic Health Team.
Greene received her master's degree of science in clinical nutrition at the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a thesis about the cognitive and physiological correlation of physical activity as assessed with accelerometry in adolescents in 2005.
She is a registered dietitian of the American Dietetic Association, a licensed dietitian of the Alabama Board of Examiners for Dietetic/Nutrition Practice and has a certificate of training in adult weight management.
Greene said she was active in clinical outcomes research in nutrition and was the program director of the nationally known weight management program for adults, EatRight Program, when she worked at UAB.
Her work at UAB also included developing dietary interventions for weight management programs and research protocols, and dietitian support for spinal cord injury weight management research.
"My first four years were spent working at UAB primarily doing clinical trials regarding nutrition issues and working with UAB's EatRight Weight Management program," Greene said.
The young dietitian award is presented to members of the American Dietetic Association under the age of 35 who have active participation in the national, state or district association.
The award recipient must also show demonstrated concern for the promotion of optimal health and the nutritional status of the population.
"The main reward is primarily the recognition, and my name will be published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association later this year," Greene said.
Greene has authored and co-authored five peer-reviewed journal articles in the past three years.
"I guess the voters thought that I was qualified because I am very active in our national association," Greene said.
