Julio Jones received 17 votes for SGA president in March's elections, coming in a distant third for the SGA's highest office, and had a total of 53 votes for other positions on the ballot.
There were a total of 259 write-ins for the 2008 SGA election. Write-in candidates ranged from Big Al to Gabriel Garcia Marquez's classic novel "100 Years of Solitude."
"I think that this year's list, compared to last year's, is not that?funny," said UA Elections Board Chairwoman Bethany Powe. "We had some great ones last spring. This year, we had a lot of ?Julio Jones, some Nick Sabans, and, of course, your cartoon characters. It's always interesting to see what students have come up with for the election.
"We don't encourage these types of write-in names, but it does add humor to our lives when we are typing and counting each-and-every write-in."
Other popular write-ins this year included Tide football head coach Nick Saban and popular traveling preacher Brother Micah. A man who only went by the name Jesus received eight votes.
"Probably the only time I will beat Julio Jones at the University of Alabama," Vice President for Financial Affairs Philip Mahoney, said in a previous issue of The CW.
Mahoney also defeated God, who received one vote for vice president for Financial Affairs.
Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama lost the Pennsylvania primary Tuesday, but at the Capstone defeated opponents Hilary Clinton and John McCain in total SGA write-in votes with six in March. Clinton and McCain each received one vote.
"We always see some funny write-ins for SGA and Homecoming elections, and I think that competitive races for office benefit the student body. However, I think the fact that over 5,200 students voted really sends the message that our students care about student government," said SGA President Cason Kirby.
Comedy Central personality Stephen Colbert, Kermit the Frog and former "Legends of the Hidden Temple" star Olmec, the talking stone head, also received votes.
The offices of executive secretary and president received the most write-in votes, with 43 each.
Four positions this year were uncontested, with the only competition being a potential write-in campaign.
The number 13 received only one vote for SGA Senate, continuing its traditional streak of bad luck.
Vice President for Student Affairs Louis Crow said in a previous issue of The Crimson White she was most worried about Brother Micah.
"With Brother Micah's public speaking skills and his ability to get a crowd's attention, I knew it was going to [be a] hard road. With the amount of people he was upsetting, a positive campaign would win. I think I showed Brother Micah who's boss," she said.
Other interesting write-ins included MacGyver for president, Rick James and Godzilla for Senate and an executive secretary vote for Monica Lewinsky, who came from behind to tie King Kong.
Godzilla did not return calls by press time.

The CW needs to grow up already if this is newsworthy. Was the line about Godzilla even needed?

That was hilarious. If you don't like it then don't read it.

The Godzilla line was definitely needed, especially since we didn't find out what Olmec had to say about the votes he got.

It's unfair to call this a dumb article. This chuckle-worthy article might not be front-page material, but it's more relevant than one might think. The point is, although UA has around 23,000 students, only around 5,200 voted; this comes to about 23%. (Continued…)

The article was not funny and horribly written. If the CW wants to run an article like this they should not run it on the front page. It's in bad taste and very unprofessional looking to do so. (Continued…)
