Future Hell's Angels take notice: the University's Transportation Service Center will be implementing a new set of rules and regulations for driving and parking motorcycles and motorized scooters on campus during the 2008-09 school year.
Beginning on August 1, all motorcycles and motorized scooters will be required to register with Transportation Services and buy a parking permit for $50. The permit will allow the driver to park on campus for one year.
In previous years, there have not been enough motorcycles on campus to implement a separate policy for motorcycles and motorized scooters; however, the growing number of these vehicles prompted Transportation Services to designate special areas for motorcycle parking.
Students who have a current University parking permit registered to another vehicle will not be required to buy another permit for the motorcycle; however, they must register all vehicles with Transportation Services, located in the Student Services building.
Motorcycles and motorized scooters must be parked in designated parking areas, which will be marked with appropriate signs. A portion of each parking district, unfit for vehicle parking, will be restructured for motorcycle parking. Boundaries in these areas will be designated on the parking surface. Motorcycles will be prohibited from parking in lots and decks that are reserved for vehicle parking only.
To increase the safety of pedestrians on campus, drivers of motorcycles and motorized scooters will not be allowed to drive or park on campus sidewalks and other pedestrian areas.
Parking and traffic citations will be given out to drivers who violate these restrictions. A $50 citation will be given to drivers caught driving motorcycles on sidewalks or pedestrian areas on campus. Motorcycles and motorized scooters parked on sidewalks will be towed and impounded at the owner's expense.
All parking permits can be applied for online or at the Transportation Services desk. Of the 25,000 students that make up the University, only 6,000 have registered for parking passes according to Ronnie Robertson, the director of Transportation Services.
Originally, students were to register for parking permits at the time they registered for classes to ensure that their class standing influenced which parking areas were available for them to register for. Now that all current students are able to register for classes, the parking permits are open to everyone.
